Ok, so you have this brilliant new invention idea... Step 1Write it down! If you don't you might forget it and then all its profit potential will be lost. I suggest that you keep an invention journal to write down all your inventions and ideas so that you reinforce your inventive state of mind! Be alert, a new invention idea might come at any time. Step 2Do a patent search on your invention idea. Do not be afraid to check up if someone has patented something similar to yours. If you do find something similar then don't be put off - this means that you will have to work at your invention some more until it is more unique. Sometimes you have to find the gaps of the patented invention and fill them! More on patenting in Step 6. Step 3Draw or sketch your invention idea. For some invention drawing tools and methods click here. Step 4Print this invention questionnaire out and fill it in to help you gain better insight into your new invention. If you can't answer a question, that's great! It means that you need to refine it a bit more until you have an answer. Step 5Use this great free tool that I developed to help you fine-tune your new invention idea. Step 6Patent your invention idea. No invention idea is patent-proof. If you see commercial value in your invention you must patent it. It does not matter how simple your new invention is, sometimes the most simple ideas generate the most royalties. In step 1, I suggested that you keep an invention journal for your new invention ideas. When you have come up with an invention that you truly believe in, continue to document and build upon as much as possible in your journal. All this documentation will prove beneficial not only in helping you (and others) understand your idea but also when you actually file the patent. This answers a question you may have been asking: should I seek a patent attorney? Yes - rather get a professional to do the job properly for you so that you don't run into trouble later on. If you want some brilliant and insightful information on how the entire process works, things you never knew about the process, and how to make the process work for you, I seriously suggest that you read Patent It Yourself by David Pressman. I keep it close by and refer to it all the time. It is considered the bible on patenting because of its comprehensibility and ease of reference. You are guided through the entire patent process, and given tips along the way. Going through this book thoroughly can actually save you thousands of dollars.
Step 7It is now time to sell your invention idea to a manufacturer/venture capitalist. Go to the sections on Selling your invention and Licensing your invention to help you out.
